Scraping TikTok
Scraping TikTok to study emotion in political supporter discourse
As part of a large European research enterprise, this project examines emotions in populist supporter discourse during the 2024 EU election (Gustafsson, Seiler Brylla). It explores how various semiotic resources are used to express and evoke emotions in communication between populist parties and their supporters.
Through an ethnographic approach, the researchers observe interactions on Sweden Democrat (and associated) accounts from April to June, 2024. The ethnographic data includes field notes and an observation protocol documenting content, affective resources, and interactions.
The 30 posts that generated the most interaction were selected for analysis. Comments were exported from TikTok, and posts (including videos) were automatically retrieved. The first 100 comments on each post, totaling 3,000 comments, were selected for further analysis, which is now ongoing.
