ERP research methods

The event-related potential technique (ERP) is an important method in neuroscience, as it allows us to record specific electrophysiological responses in the brain and relate them to different cognitive processes. This is done by recording scalp EEG (electroencephalography) using an electrode cap while the participant performs a cognitive task. The EEG signal can be processed and analyzed in many ways, and one way is to compute and compare ERPs related to specific experimental conditions. This method can be used to investigate neural mechanisms underlying memory, language processes and many other cognitive functions.

The Humanities Lab has two different EEG systems that can be used by researchers in the field of Humanities or from other parts of Lund University.

We offer two PhD courses that aim to provide researchers with the tools needed to conduct an ERP study within his or her field of research. All students and researchers who plan to conduct an ERP study in the Humanities Lab are strongly recommended to take one of these courses prior to beginning their study.

The courses are open primarily to PhD students, and researchers at Lund University, but can also accept master's students who plan to use ERP in their thesis. PhD students will be prioritized if the number of applicants exceeds the course limit.

Contact Emelie.Stiernstromer@psychology.lu.se for questions concerning ERP courses and use of the EEG systems.

ERP research methods: theory and practice (7.5 ECTS) FALL term

This is our full ERP course, offering both theoretical lectures and practical exercises in the lab. If you have no prior knowledge of electrophysiology we recommend that you take this course. Please see the course website for further information.

ERP research methods: recording and analysis (2 ECTS) SPRING and FALL term

This is a short course with emphasis on practical exercises in the lab. It has the same content as the Practice part of the full ERP course. The purpose of this course is to offer the practical exercises separately, and for these to be available every term. This is recommended for those who want to quickly get some hands-on experience with the equipment and software. Please see the course website for further information.
